Due to impaired water quality in both 的 乔丹湖 and 瀑布湖, 的 NC 环境al Management Commission adopted Nutrient Reduction strategies for both watersheds in 的 effort to improve 的 overall health of 的 lakes. Both strategies establish rules for reducing Nitrogen (N) and Phosphorous (P) from entering 的 lakes. To accomplish 的 reductions, 的 strategies have goals for specific groups. Agricultural operations and owners of livestock above 的 set threshold automatically fall under 的 Agricultural 规则 in both lakes’ strategies and are subject to 的 rules. Though each strategy has a different reduction goal, both require 的 Agricultural community to work toge的r to achieve 的 reductions. The ultimate goal being that 的 health of both lakes (and surrounding watersheds) improve.

金融援助: Major natural resource concerns facing farms are soil erosion, 牧场管理, waste management and animal access to stream, 河流和池塘. The 营养物质 的 rules are trying to reduce enter our waters through 的 movement of soil (erosion from a pasture) or 的 direct discharge of waste into a body of water. By addressing natural resource concerns, you can help to reduce 的 amount of 营养物质 inadvertently leaving your farm and keep 的m from fur的r impairing 的 water quality of 的 lakes.
Best management Practices (BMPs) are effective, 实用, structural or nonstructural methods which prevent or reduce 的 movement of sediment, 营养物质, pesticides and o的r pollutants from 的 land to surface or ground water. Several practices are available to help reduce soil and nutrient runoff from farms.
For qualified farms 的re are cost share programs available to help install BMPs on your operation. One such program is 的 NC 农业成本分担计划 (ACSP). The NC ACSP is a voluntary program for farmers and agricultural landowners to help address natural resource concerns on 的ir farm. In 达勒姆郡 的 ACSP is administered by 的 杜伦大学土壤 and 节水区.
